To Be Auctioned To Support World’s Refugee YouthNet Proceeds Will Be Donated To Ninemillion.org
Supporting the ninemillion.org awareness and fund-raising campaign to provide education and sport for the world’s refugee youth, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) is auctioning a limited edition set of BE@RBRICK toys representing the eight Nike-sponsored teams that qualified for this year’s World Cup—Brazil, Portugal, Australia, Croatia, Holland, Mexico, Korea and the United States. Nike created the set in collaboration with MEDICOM TOY Corporation of Japan.
The collection of eight life-size figurines will be auctioned online at www.charityfolks.com beginning July 1 at 10 am EDT. The auction will end July 9 at 11:59 pm EDT. Net proceeds from the BE@RBRICK auction will be donated to ninemillion.org.
Ninemillion.org was launched June 20 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees with the support of founding partners Nike and Microsoft. An innovative global campaign, ninemillion.org’s goal is to bring attention to and create a better future for the world’s nine million refugee youth through the power of education and sport. The campaign aims to create a global community dedicated to giving the world’s refugee youth the chance to learn and play.
In addition to raising awareness about refugee youth, ninemillion.org is the primary way individuals can donate money to the campaign. The Nike Foundation is matching the first US $1 million donated to ninemillion.org. The auction of the BE@RBRICK toy collection is another way Nike is supporting fund-raising efforts for ninemillion.org.
Two-thirds of money raised through ninemillion.org will be distributed by UNHCR to support education in refugee communities, including fundamental education and life skills training; HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention; gender sensitivity; and peace education programs for war-torn communities. The remaining one-third will fund access to customized sport and play programs by Right To Play for refugee youth, with an emphasis on getting girls and young women onto the playing field.
Nike and Microsoft are founding members of UNHCR’s Council of Business Leaders. Right To Play is a Toronto-based international humanitarian organization dedicated to using sport and play to foster the healthy physical, social and emotional development of children in refugee camps worldwide.
A 30-second public service announcement featuring Brazilian football star Ronaldo, a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Goodwill Ambassador, helped launch the campaign. The public service announcement is available for viewing at ninemillion.org, which also features individual portraits and biographies of refugee youth from camps in Azerbaijan, Uganda and Thailand. These are youth who have seen their parents killed, have fled their homes because of war, or who were born in a refugee camp and know nothing else. Despite the trauma and conflict in their lives and the harsh conditions of a refugee camp, they are connected by a universal love of sport and the desire to learn and create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Ninemillion.org is committed to giving them that chance.
