Celebrating almost 30 years of air cushioning, tracing the air legacy from the 1979 tailwind to Nikes latest innovation the Air Max 360, the Festival of Air will span an impressive 5000 square feet within NikeTown. The festival is free to enter and will showcase three decades of Nike Air technology, genealogy, and innovation as well as its unique cultural impact in the UK.Visitors to NikeTown will be able to experience the benefits of Air cushioning for themselves through interactive challenges. You can be like Jordan on the basketball challenge that tests your jumping ability. As evidence of your dunking feats youll take away a unique memento of your jump. And aspiring Olympic athletes can run on Air whilst testing their endurance capabilities by taking on a treadmill set at marathon world champion, Paula Radcliffes pace.
Nike Air has always had a unique connection with urban culture, which is why one of the most exciting aspects of the exhibition is the sneaker gallery and live in store events. Throughout the festival, well respected urban DJs will be invited to mix music from the key eras of Air Max (/80s/90s/00s). The gallery is where renowned artists such as Dave White will be on stage to create unique artworks of iconic Air Max trainers, while UK street dance champions, Flawless, showcase moves from the highlighted eras of the Air Max lineage.
Nike has unlocked the vaults to display archive Air Max designs from yesteryear to present day. Visitors will come face-to-face with the inner workings of Nike as they inspect original design drawings, listen to interviews with designers and walk down memory lane as they watch Nikes most famous Air ads.
A gallery of artwork and creative interpretations of Air will be housed in the Festival of Air. Exhibits will include Air Max jewellery by Reino and Air Max toys from Swish NYC. Private sneaker collections (provided by trainer specialists Crooked Tongues) will be on display, as well as customized trainers by stars such as Halle Berry and Sarah Jessica Parker. Serious sneaker freaks will be invited to an after hours closed-door event where they can swap trainers and stories.
In another area, Nike Air fans will delve into the science of Air and discover what really happened on the day NASA aerospace engineer, Frank Rudy approached Nike with the idea of putting air into shoes. Visitors will be asked to think about some of the following questions: What is Air? How did Air come about? What are the different types of Nike Air? What are the benefits of Nike Air?
The Nike Festival of Air is a must visit for any sneaker fan out there and will be open to the public from 25th August 28th September.
