To mark the 10th anniversary of GQ Magazine – Taiwan Edition, it and its sister publication Vogue Taiwan, hosted a memorable party last Friday, October 15th. The red carpeted gala took place at the roof top garden of Eslite Hsin Yi Flagship store in the heart of Taipei City, capital of Taiwan. Countless celebrities, including models that graced the covers of both magazine, past and present, were escorted down the brilliant red carpet. However, the climax of the evening must be the 1000+ people toast to the success of both publications, followed by a 5-minutes fireworks.

As a part of its 10th year celebration, GQ Taiwan created a concept store named “A Decade of Deluxe” on the first floor of Eslite Hsin-Yi Flagship, the very same building where the gala took place. It showcase some of the most sought after objects that GQ editors want to share with its readers. One of the center pieces is FUSED – a collaborative project between GQ Taiwan, Microsoft, and Freshness.

Mentioned briefly in the previous segment, the concept behind FUSED is quite unique. 10 brand new XBOX360, given by Microsoft, to 10 world renown urban street culture artists, invited by Freshness, as mediums to express their artistic ideals. The outcome is 10 one-of-the-kind, functional art works, and a very unique birthday present(s) for GQ Taiwan.

A reminder, All 10 XBOX360 will be auction off this Saturday, October 21st, with all proceeds going to World Vision, one of GQ Taiwan’s favorite charity. Those who are interested in bidding, you can visit the special site: GQ Taiwan’s 10th Birthday Celebration on Yahoo! Taiwan Auction.

You can view the profiles of the first 5 artists featured in FUSED at: Freshness Feature: FUSED – Part 1. Here are the other 5 artists presented on the FUSED exhibition:

DED – United Kingdom
www.dedass.com

Established in 1991 by Jon and Nik Daughtry, the UK-based design agency DED Associates has created outstanding visual delights for its clients. In doing so, it won a place in the book “Graphic Design for the 21st Century: 100 of the World’s Best Graphic Designers” by Taschen Publishing. It also garnered numerous mentions in some of most well know design publications such as IDEA (Japan), IdN (Hong Kong), and Creative Review (UK).

Tiger Pugilist

DED wrote, ” Mixing the essence of vintage boxing imagery into a scene of organic fantasy imbuing Japanese flora and circus poster design, juxtaposing against the sleek contemporary canvas of the xbox 360.” This XBOX360 present the mutiude of influences that DED takes on: vintage vs. contemporary, East vs. West.

Dave White – United Kingdom
www.davewhite.me.uk

An exhibition in Portland, a live-painting event in New York, the FUSED project in Taipei, works by Dave White always have the ability to appear at different locations simultaneously worldwide, a testament to the popularity of his works. Gained fame in UK’s art circle even before he can drink alcohol, Dave have sold hundreds of his works world wide. But it is his focus on niche markets, sneakers and Star Wars, which he is a fan of, that pushed his popularity to another level.

Lean Green 360 Machine

Dave White is a “gamer”, especially first-person shooter and simulations, such as Ghost Recon and Battlefield 2. You can just imagine Dave alive with ideas when he discovered the medium was a XBOX360. Dave incorporated two ideas: a well used ammo box found on a battle field and a painted nose of a World War 2 fighter as a tool of intimidation.

Honest
www.stayhonest.com

It is difficult to described what Honest is, simply because its projects covered everything imaginable. From tradition print media to non-tradional online advertising, the New York based company covers all, even short films. Equally impressive is its list of clients and recognition from Cannes, Webby, and Its works been recognized by awards such as Cannes, Webby, and National Design Award (US).

SkinBox

To change its idea into reality, Honest altered the appearance of the XBOX360 completely. The outcome, is what Honest named, the SkinBox.

We wanted to make the XBox360 feel like a living thing, something organic and unexpected. So we grew it some skin. It’s alien. It’s animal. It’s human. It’s a mix of them all. It’s something completely unknown. We do know that it’s in the middle of digesting a snack, which you’ll see remnants of on it’s side. Who knows how long it will take for it to fully be assimilated into it’s system? Could be months, could be years, could be millenniums. If you want to cut open it’s skin to see what it’s made of, feel free, just get yourself a very sharp scalpel or razor blade and slowly cut into it. Be careful. Hopefully it won’t scream.

Touch it, play with it, manipulate it yourself. Peel the skin away and then put it back. Make it even more grotesque than it already is. Or leave it just the way it is and admire it’s innate beauty. It was hard to give it away because we wanted to take care of it, nurse it to health, give it a reason to live. Now it’s up to you.
