Currently at New York’s Gagosian Gallery, an exhibition of new works by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, who transformed the Japanese pop-art movement. The exhibition, titled ” Tranquility of the Heart Torment of the Flesh – Open Wide the Eye of the Heart, and Nothing is Invisible”, is a departure from Murakami’s known whimsical style, but centers on his interpretations of Daruma.
A figure embedded deeply within Japanese culture, Daruma was an Indian monk who created Zen Buddhism in China around 5th or 6th century A.D. Legend has it that he reached enlightenment after meditating 9 years, without food or water, in a nearby cave at the Shaolin Temple. The exhibition will be on going until June 9th
