More feature and photos after the jump,

The story of G-Shock started in 1981. Casio wanted to produce the toughest digital watch on the market and debunk the common conception that watches are delicate items. Before the release of model DW-5000, the first G-Shock watch, in 1983, technicians at Casio tested over 2,000 prototypes to reach the acceptable criteria. Aside from using durable materials like hybrid stainless steel, Casio formulated a multi-layer protection technique, which include:

(1) Covered each parts with rubber coating
(2) Adhered the circuit board to a urethane shield
(3) Everything is encased in harden resin sleeve for added protection

For their creation, Casio coined the term “Almighty-Tough”

Though Casio is famous for its outstanding calculators and traditional timekeeping products in Japan. The rugged G-Shock watches resonated more with consumers in United States. By 1990, over 2 million G-Shock watches were sold in the U.S. to outdoor enthusiasts, pro athletes, emergency responders, truck drivers, and etc… A television commercial aired in 1984 summed it best, featured a hockey player slap-shot a G-Shock as a puck. Still, the watch functioned precisely and suffered no impairments

It wasn’t long before skateboarders and surfers on the West Coast found versatilities of G-Shock to be more useful than other timepieces on the market then. The trend percolated across the Pacific on to the street of Tokyo. In 1990, when Casio released G-Shock DW-5900, the world’s first watch to have 3 graphical LCDs, Japanese youths deemed it as an indispensable accessory. Since then, the G-Shock series continues to set records. Today, the watches are sold in over 100 countries, with a record of 60 million watches sold thus far and counting…
