Zippo is a great case study of American ingenuity. After seeing a friend struggling with an European-made lighter, George G. Blaisdell set out to create his own. After purchasing the rights to that European-made light, Blaisdell remodeled it with the now signature rectangular casing and hinged cover. Blaisdell then named his new creation Zippo - after another new invention at the time, the zipper.
75 years later, the original windproof lighter is as much as Americana as apple pie, Norman Rockwell paintings and baseball. Zippo is still based in Bradford, Pennsylvania and the Blaisdell’s grandson runs the company today. More importantly, Zippo has become a much prized collectible, with annual conventions and swap meets both here and abroad.
So it is no surprise that Hiroshi Fujiwara and the crew of honeyee.com chose Zippo as their new collaborative subject.
This large undertaking included NEIGHBORHOOD, SOPHNET. and its sub-label F.C.R.B., Stussy, and honeyee.com. Each label is able to convey their themes onto the lighter’s casing. A total of 5 designs (NEIGHBORHOOD has 2) are available, with each limited at 50 units only. The lighters will be on sale early next month.
