Nike Windrunner

Devon Burt – Global Design Director Nike Sportswear Apparel
In addition to Air Max 90, the revered Nike Windrunner also went through its own “re-evolution” by Nike Sportswear creative team. Designed by Geoff Hollister, who was a runner on the track team of University of Oregon and under the tutorage of the late Nike co-founder, Bill Bowerman, the Windrunner took on inspirations from traditional clothing created by Pacific Northwest Native Americans. By the incorporation of 2 different synthetic fabrics: one laminated with water-repellent polyurethane and the other lined with mesh vents, at angled seams of 26°. Hollister not only created the ubiquitous Windrunner chevron, but in turn, achieved what other before it could not, a breathable apparel with the capability to brave the elements.

For Nike Sportswear’s rendition of Hollister’s classic, Nike’s newest technology, Flywire, was applied once again. The light weight, high strength fabric allowed the new version to achieve something remarkable – to marked down its weight to only 116 grams. Explained by Nike Senior Designer Jarrett Reynolds, “Our goal was to make the lightest Windrunner ever and Flywire is a ground zero innovation for weight reduction.”
