As long as there were bike messengers, there were messenger bags. Created by the late Frank Demartini of Global Canvas and later refined by Manhattan Portage and others, the versatile messenger bag been a must-have tool for bike messengers for the last 3 decades.
During the 1990s, however, the professional tool took on a new role in the schools of NYC. Because of safety concerns, no NYC high school students were permitted to have lockers. In search of a more spacious alternative than their back pack, they found bags by Manhattan Portage. Portage bags were especially favored by student athletes, who could stored their cleats along side their notebooks for an after school pick-up game of ultimate Frisbee. The demand for Manhattan Portage became so great in fact. Students would cut classes just to get the latest models directly off the factory floor in the Garment District.
Because the increasing interest in fixed gear bike culture. Japanese retailer BEAMS teamed up Manhattan Portage this season in creating an exclusive line of messenger bags. Feature the same Cordura nylon or 40 oz. ballistic Cordura as the original Portage bags. The BEAMS edition add on a special logo/graphic on the bottom and its interior. A series of special colorways + pipings were included also. Currently available at all BEAMS locations in Japan.
