What was at the time billed as “Ultimate Glory”, the June 7th, 1996 match up between Oscar De La Hoya and the reigning WBC Light Welterweight Champion Julio César Chávez went as one of the great upset in boxing history. Though vivacious, many counted out Oscar “The Golden Boy” De La Hoya’s chance of winning against Julio César “The Lion of Culiacan” Chávez, who already had more than 10 years worth of professional boxing experience. All that changed during the first minute of the round 1 when a jab by De La Hoya opened a deep gash above Chávez left eye, an wound he gotten during a recent training. Though Chávez’s trainers desperately worked to stop the bleeding. So much blood poured out that by round 4, the fight was stopped by the referee and the WBC Light Welterweight Title was awarded to De La Hoya.
To mark that historical night at Las Vegas Caesars Palace, Nike created the Nike Dunk High Premium – Ultimate Glory Edition. Made from premium leather covered entirely in elephant skin marking. The whole sneaker, along with its laces, were dyed in red, a symbolism to that very bloody fight. Embroidered details such as the numeral 2:0 and the name Chávez further emphasize that legendary fight. The Nike Dunk High Premium – Ultimate Glory Edition will be available at select Nike boutiques worldwide this week, including Overkill in Berlin.
