Something extraordinary happened on this very day, 40 years ago. 2 men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, landed on the Moon and forever altered the annal of human history. To commemorate this momentous occasion, timepiece maker OMEGA just release a special edition – Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11: 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.
A direct descent of the Original Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch worn by Aldrin to the lunar surface (Armstrong left his back on the Lunar Module as a system backup), the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition feature the same shatter-proof acrylic crystal, Hesalite. And like the original, a black dial face powered by OMEGA’s reliable calibre 1861 movement.
In addition, a few alterations were incorporate into the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition. In place of cloth strap, a stainless steel bracelet securely fasten the watch around the wrist. A small commemorative medallion sits where the small seconds counter was. Imprinted on it is the Apollo 11 Mission Patch, designed by the 3rd member of that historic mission, astronaut Michael Collins. It features an eagle landing on the lunar surface with an olive branch of peace, with earth on the horizon. Another is inscription of 02:56 GMT in red on the dial face, the exact time Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon and uttered the words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” On its back, the Apollo 11 Mission Patch is engraved along with the limited edition number (0000/7969), the time 02:56 GMT, the date July 21st, 1969, when Armstrong and Aldrin set foot on surface. Plus the words ” The First Watch Worn On The Moon”.
The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11: 40th Anniversary Limited Edition comes in special black box that will include a 42 mm silver medllon in honor of the mission, along with Certificate of Authenticity and information on the mission.
