We showed you a sneak preview of the Packer Shoes collaboration with Reebok for the release of the Pump20, which showcases the clean lines of the shoe and fuses some Atlanta Hawks uniform colors into what could have passed for an actual signature model from 20 years back. The inspiration for the shoe was a time during the days before the internet posted up pictures of a sneaker for months before its release and players would bring out their signature shoes for the Sunday afternoon N.B.A. All-Star game. Players like Jordan would wear their new sneakers during the game to give national audiences a chance to check out the new kicks.
Somehow, Dominique Wilkins, The Human Highlight Film, never got his own sneaker for any of the 9 all-star games he played in. So to commemorate the 20 year anniversary of the Reebok Pump, Packer shoes is honoring both the heritage of the Reebok Pump and the career of Dominique Wilkins. There will be only 31 pairs of the Packer model released on this night only, while 29 pairs of both of the original colorways in black and white will also be available for sale. All three of the pumps will be individually numbered with a Packer tag on the inside of the tongue.
To commemorate the release, Dominique Wilkins himself will be on hand to sign boxes and sneakers. The sneaker has many specific references to Dominique, including his uniform number 21. On the heels in gold, the years ’85 and ’90 are embroidered–the two years that ‘Nique won the Slam Dunk Contest at the N.B.A. All-Star weekend. Packer Shoes is also releasing a shirt to coincide with the release of the sneaker with a silhouette of a famous Wilkins dunk from the Dunk Contest. Freshness will be on hand tomorrow to chronicle the release of the three Pumps tomorrow, so if you’re in the area, head over to Packer for a unique opportunity to meet ‘Nique.
