After collaborating with Supreme, Damien Hirst who is famed for playing with formaldehyde and medical instruments for his art work, also worked with Louis Vuitton to create a one-off Medical Cabinet this season. The medical trunk lined with blue microfiber was inspired by the movie, Dead Ringers, where a beautiful display of surgical instruments captured Hirst's attention. The black cowhide leather covered somber number is decorated with juxtaposing colorful butterflies on the outside (the butterflies also made appearances on the artist's TREK bike for Lance Armstrong), and a silver skull on the inside. While trunks one purchase from Louis Vuitton usually come empty for one's own belongings, this piece created by Hirst comes filled with surgical instruments.
This Medical Cabinet was created as a part of Louis Vuitton's "L'Excellence du Savoir Faire", which is a fundraiser for the Red Cross in conjunction with the Red Cross' 150th Anniversary. Some other participating artists and iconic figures include photographer Annie Leibovitz, the Creative Director Marc Jacobs, Patrick-Louis Vuitton, Gustavo Santaolalla, and Ferran Aria. An auction was held on Nov 17 by the Sotheby's where all proceeds of the auction went to the Nigerian Red Cross Fighting Malnutrition Programme. Check out some pictures of Hirst working with Vuitton, the sketches (both sketches by Vuitton and Hirst were auctioned with the case) and the cabinet itself. via: ilvoelv
