Damien Hirst x Louis Vuitton – Medical Cabinet | Behind The Scene

By - December 28th, 2009

On Nov. 17, Louis Vuitton held “L’Excellence du Savoir Faire” in conjunction with Red Cross for its 150th Anniversary to raise funds for the latter’s Nigerian Red Cross Fighting Malnutrition Program at Sotheby’s. Louis Vuitton rallied a number of leading figures in the creative industry such as photographer Annie Leibovitz, Louis Vuitton Creative Director Marc Jacobs, Patrick-Louis Vuitton, Gustavo Santaolalla, Ferran Aria and contemporary artist, Damien Hirst.

As previously reported, Hirst created an unique Medical Cabinet for the fundraiser, perpetuating his obsession with medicine (the artist made his name preserving animals in formaldehyde and creating a series of medicine themed art work). The cabinet is a beautiful black cowhide leather medical trunk lined with blue microfiber and filled with actual surgical instruments. The black cowhide leather upper is decorated with butterfly prints also spotted on the TREK bicycle Hirst created for Lance Armstrong for Tour de France this past summer. While we had only previously shown sketches and a picture of Hirst and Vuitton working together on the medical cabinet, here we have a closer look at what went on behind the scene from conceptualization to sketching and the actual production of the cabinet. With a big thank you to aarting, we are able get a better understanding of Hirst’s creative and production process. via: aarting
