Even for those unfamiliar with contemporary, they would know Jeff Koons for his public sculptures which include a high profile floral sculpture Puppy at Rockefeller Center, and more recently, an enormous shiny Balloon Flower at 7 Wall Street in New York City. Jeff Koons also set the record for living artist at auction in 2007 when his stainless steel Hanging Heart brought Sotheby’s $23.6 million. Devia:ting a little from the artist’s public and prominent work to get in touch with his style, Koons challenges his viewers to redefine and explore the meaning of perception and taste by reworking existing everyday objects (ranging from vacuum cleaners to balloon animals) and icons (Popeye and the Hulk) into new art.
Taking art beyond the commercial realm of auction houses, Jeff Koons reversed his usual antics and worked his art into everyday objects by collaborating with Switzerland-based watch company, Ikepod, to create new limited edition watches. Founded by industrial designer Marc Newson, Ikepod aims to fuse innovative and timeless design with technically advanced mechanisms. The collaborative limited edition Horizontal “HHTJK” Watch comes in two versions, a limited edition platinum version and a titanium one. The watches are highly graphic with the face featuring a colorful print of a pyramid stack of cannonballs against a backdrop of dots. The straps are interestingly streamlined and feature an intriguing button buckle system.
Bound to be interesting conversational pieces, these watches also give Jeff Koons’ admirers an opportunity to tot his art around. The watches are now available online at colette.
