In remembrance of the diaspora African Americans suffered during the last 400 years, the month of February is marked as Black History Month here in the US. First charted by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, Feburary is now view not only as a time for reverence but a month of celebration in the achievements by African Americans despite of the countless challenges.
For this year’s Black History Month, Nike, as the label has done during previous years, and Nike Sportswear, created a special edition pack. To feature a new Air Force 1 design and varsity jacket. To highlight the Afro-centric orientation, the design include piping and outsole in red, black, and green – colorway long associated with the Pan-African movement. Black premium leather upper etched with an all-important statement “The definition of a renaissance individual: one who possesses a multitude of skills, talent and a broad base of knowledge.” in all-over fashion, which also doubles as the design’s inspiration. A silhouettes of a man and a woman signified the equality of both genders imprinted on the sockliner and special hang tag.
And as with all other Black History Month editions in the past, proceeds from the Air Force 1 – Black History Month 2010 Edition will go to a good cause, this year being the Cheyney University, the oldest African American education institution in the U.S.
Though the limited edition was only exclusive to a selected few in the previous years, Nike this year will make the Air Force 1 – Black History Month 2010 Edition available at selected Nike Sportswear retailers, including Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer, NikeTown, and the following outlets on Thursday, February 18th.
