Sort of like a mentor to many upcoming designers in Japan, Kita-san, the Creative Director of Gallery1950 (G1950), is also a quick study of Americana and its cultural influence – a reference point he draw inspirations from for many Gallery1950’s designs and collaborations. One such is the recent partnership with PONY. Out of gritty streets of Brooklyn, PONY’s canvas sneakers was long view as the be-it-all, do-it-al alternatives to the more expensive adidas and Nike. A testament to its versatility, kids would rock the same pair from to the concrete courts dotted across NYC, only to skate home on the same pair after the quick pick up game.
For its collaboration, Kita-san and Gallery1950 selected the Mid Cut, a throwback to the original PONY from 1972. Composed of rugged canvas with suede pipings, all featured the unmistakable V-shape insignia on the sidewall in contrast white. Dual markings on both collaborators are found – PONY’s on the tongue and an orange rubber tab on the heel for Gallery1950. Available in 3 colors – Black, Green, and Aqua Marine, the Gallery1950 x PONY Mid Cut Sneakers are now for sale at the Gallery1950 flagship in Ebisu, selected retailers with Gallery1950 account, and DEDUE online store within ZOZO shopping network.
