We once asked Brooklyn-base Japanese artist Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama about the theme behind his artworks. After a brief consideration, he responded with the answer “exploration and experience”. Though its clear to see the melding of East and West, of traditional and contemporary in his works. Matsuyama, better known by his friends as Matzu, continues to explore the methodology behind each of his works. Through these experimentation, his new works reflect differently from the last each time. It is this process that Matsuyama wants to share with his audience, the exploration of art not as a stagnant state of signature strokes or iconic gestures, but as living entity without constraint.
Another reflection of this ideal is on the artist’s recent BE@RBRICK collaboration with MEDICOM TOY CO. Comes in size 100% and 400%, each figurine is adorned with black paint strokes on white backdrop, again, ambiguously mixing of Japanese calligraphy with Western oil painting. A stack-like motif in gold, hints of Matsuyama’s signature, prominently featured on the center front. Finally, the figure is finished with a gold-tipped nose. The Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama x MEDICOM TOY – 100% + 400% BE@RBRICK are set to launch on Saturday, March 6th, at ISETAN Shinjuku Department Store in Men’s Building. The figure will also be available at selected BE@RBRICK retailers globally on a later date.
