Here are some little less known things about the fantastic duo, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, behind Opening Ceremony—the quintessential hip spot for uncovering rare coveted items and unique accouterments—that they can not only finish each other’s sentences, but they can speak in unison. Friends since college days, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon started Opening Ceremony with a simple whim to stop working and create a space for themselves where they can have excuses to travel, explore and hang out with cool people.

And these little known facts are uncovered by Spike Jonze, the director of Where The Wild Things Are, who had spent a Saturday hanging out with the duo and documented their conversation on film. Leon and Lim gave Jonze a run down of the brief history of Opening Ceremony and various adorable anecdotes which traces how they started out with a $20,000 loan from the bank and grew the store from a space with two workers (themselves) into a global venture with stores in Los Angeles, Japan, an online shop and also spaces in Ace Hotel and ACNE. Check out the video created with Vice’s VBS TV and learn about the various fun tidbits behind Opening Ceremony and do look out for the “peephole” in Opening Ceremony where Leon and Lim used to hide to watch customers in the store from the back.
