Before paparazzi became a household name and TMZ gotten its own time slot on TV, there was Ricky Powell. The photographer captured the heydays of Studio 54 to the pioneering scene of hip-hop with acts from Run DMC and others. But it isn’t just about his photographs, Powell’s acute memories of events gives him an uncanny ability to reiterate a moment in details, making him the unofficial visual archivist of NYC.
Together with WEST, Powell recreated 3 of his infamous images: circa 1988 Mike Tyson in Studio 54 with Public Enemy after a street brawl with Mitch “Blood” Green in Harlem. Circa 1987 DMC of Run DMC in Hollis, Queens. And circa 2000 Powell on vacation in Venice, Italy. All 3 screen-printed onto all cotton tees, black or white. Part of WEST’s exclusive apparel line, all will be available at WEST this Thursday, May 20th. Interested parties could also call to order at 212-787-8595
