An unseasonably warm spring night was quick to convert the sidewalk of Upper West Side into a summer block party this past Thursday as WEST launched its collaboration with photographer/archivist Ricky Powell. Hosted by WEST and organized by AM PM New York, a small line up quickly took over a portion of West 72 nd Street. The collection, a recreation of some of Powell’s most infamous images: circa 1988 Mike Tyson in Studio 54 with Public Enemy after a street brawl with Mitch “Blood” Green in Harlem. Circa 1987 DMC of Run DMC in Hollis, Queens. And circa 2000 Powell on vacation in Venice, Italy, was one of the first exclusive collaboration from WEST, with more future projects currently in the works. Among the 100+ new fans and old friends like Mel B. (Village Slum) and William Yan, Powell, ever the master of ceremonies easily navigated through the crowd gathered in and outside of the store.
For those who couldn’t attend the festivities, the collaborative t-shirts are still available in store, for a limited time only. Simply visit WEST’s retail location or phone in your order, while supplies last.
