Runners today are very different from runners in the past. Back in the day, runners trek through parks for the sole purpose of health and fitness, and thus, everything they don on their rounds are very much performance and only performance oriented. However, runners today are more creative. Running is not only a mean to a better cardiovascular health, but it is also a way to seek psychological sanctuary or creative space. As such, runners today often look beyond function and demand style and innovation in their running gear. In catering to the contemporary runners’ needs, Nike Sportswear has tapped into maharam’s talents once again, after their previous collaborations in 2007 and 2009, to create a collection of running apparel for women. This collection consisting of a varsity jacket, cardigan, hooded top, running jacket, running tights and tee are very graphic driven and combines both maharam’s design aesthetics and Nike’s talent in innovation and creativity.
For this collection, maharam drew inspiration from typography and 1970s basketball, and the resulting three graphics are not only colorful, but playful and energetic. These three graphics, include a black and white three-dimensional logo rendition of letters of “maharam”, a chain-link print, and another subtle stacked type print reenergizes six different items and silhouettes. In a world where women’s performance clothing are often bland, Nike and maharam are determined to change the game and has proven that style and function can indeed, coexist and cater to the modern runner’s physical and aesthetic needs.
While the Nike Sportswear x maharam apparel are slightly cheekier and youthful in terms of design, the collaborative Dunk Highs set to release this season are more mature in color-blocked monochromes and subtle shades, providing a great balance to the apparel collection.
