Starting next Wednesday for a period of three days only, Francois Pinault’s Palazzo Grassi in Venice will be welcoming the public to Takashi Murakami’s world. As Japanese contemporary Murakami (who is not only best known for his pop Japanese manga style, bold colors, imaginative narrative and work with Louis Vuitton) is an important part of the Francois Pinault Collection (Francois Pinault’s PPR Group also owns the Gucci Group), this exhibition which not only includes a display of work but also a series of events is extremely fitting for Palazzo Grassi.
Murakami World pays homage to Japanese art through both exhibition and also public lectures, children’s arts and crafts workshop and a gastronomy class. Children can take a trip down the Japanese manga universe, learn about the history, style and also practice the art of drawing manga in Murakami World. One of the highlights for adults is a public lecture to be held on the last day of the fanfare named “From Nihonga to Superflat”, presented by Murakami himself and Japanese art historian Nobuo Tsuji.
This is perhaps a once in a lifetime chance to catch a glimpse of the man behind your favorite Louis Vuitton critters and to learn something about Japanese art from the man who is one of the forces of definition of it, so if you are in Venice, do not miss out!
