A wondering soul, Bernhard Willhelm, like so many upcoming designer, became assistant to half a dozen designers, from Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, to Dirk Bikkembergs, before arriving at his own. A graduate of Royal Academy of Antwerp, Willhelm’s whimsical and decorative creations are clear departure from the neo-modernism designs conveyed by other Belgium designers. Thus, in ways, permit Willhelm to explore realms often un-touch by his peers.
In this third series with Spanish footwear label Camper, Willhelm again fused the elements from not only 2 different genres, but the 2 sexes as well. Comprised of vulcanized rubber sole, premium leather straps, tied together with climbing rope, the clear intent was to merge features from hiking boots and sneakers. But the cloaked context of the design is that it could worn as a pair of sandals or a pair of espadrille. Part of the ongoing collaborative Toðer Project collection, the Bernhard Willhelm x Camper Sandals are currently available at online store oki-ni.
