Celebrated photographer Ryan McGinley has been commissioned by New York Times magazine to shoot one of the hottest acts in the music sing at the moment, M.I.A. Known for her daring lyrics, at times politically provocative and absolutely unapologetic, M.I.A. has fast made a name for herself beyond her native UK and became listed as one of the top 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in 2009. Using McGinley’s base, New York City as backdrop, M.I.A. is photographed traversing through the nooks and crannies of the city, and even on top of it, pushing herself out into the cityscape like a trapeze artist on a roof top swing.
The photo shoot showcases the many sides of M.I.A., perhaps reflecting the lady’s influences cross many genres and disciplines. Pensive, romantic, observant, active and free, McGinley teased out the many moods of M.I.A and captured the lady on a great series of images. Check out the results and stay tuned for the official images to be released on the New York Times Magazine.
