With a tag-line “The High-Voltage Gullwing” and a screaming paint job in fluorescent “AMG lumilectric magno” color, the SLS AMG E-CELL sounds fast even before you see it. An innovative prototype project by Mercedes-AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, the E-CELL is also demonstration platform, one which is to meet the “AMG Performance 2015” strategy to attain social responsibility along with further advancements in performance.
Powered by 4 electric motors in a synchronized form, translates to an output of 392 kW or around 525 horsepower. (To put it into prospective, an average American household uses around 4.8 kW per day only.) Fully electric powered, the E-CELL accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (or 0 to 62 mph) in 4 seconds, just 0.2 second shy of its petro guzzling sibling, the 571-hp, gasoline-driven SLS AMG. The ride, on the other hand, is something completely different. Without a traditional combustion power train, the E-CELL is near noise less and vibration free. With the exception of air blowing by, it is an ethereal experience. However, all of this comes at a cost the weight of the batteries. Fortunately because AMG’s experience in the motor sport realm, its engineers were able to distribute the batteries evenly through the center console and right behind the seats, effectively created a low center of gravity as well. To guarantee the already very fast SLS AMG to be even faster, AMG designers implemented even more improvements onto the E-CELL: A front splitter automatically extends in conjunction with rear spoiler to optimize air flow. Plus, a new instrument cluster with 9-inch LCD touch screen for situation awareness. Being that the E-CELL is an electric car, there no gears to shift. Driver simply switch between Park, Drive, and Reverse with a push of 3 large buttons on the center console.
With Mother Nature’s blessing, you simply don’t drive the E-CELL, you pilot it!.
