The opening prompts a familiarity to that of Treasure Island, the Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic – a young boy sails the vast oceans in search of a legendary treasure left behind by a pirate. But the similarities stop there when manga-ka Eiichiro Oda introduced the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, and his bizarre cast of fellow pirates. Since its debut 13 years ago, Oda’s manga, One Piece, had become a phenomenon in Japan. It became the all-time best selling title of any printed matter, even out-sold that of Harry Potter.

In its continuation of anime and manga title collaboration, Japan’s retailer UNIQLO created a limited collection featuring Luffy and his motley cru of Straw Hat Pirates for UNIQLO’s UT line. Designs ranging from the fan familiar “wanted posters” to abstract silhouettes of the Going Merry crew, to a Fair Isle’s graphic pattern tee. And of course, the the Straw Hat Pirates’ logo tee – skull and cross bones with a straw hat. Look for them at all UNIQLO branches with UT Collection and UT flagship store in Harajuku.
