Maybe its their rage against the lack of parking spaces, a starting point for environmentally sound business concept, or something more pressing, like the economy. Whatever the reason might be, luxury auto maker Mercedes-Benz and its Munich-base rival, BMW, both announced the feasibility studies for electric driven scooters. BMW’s MINI division fired the first salvo last week with its MINI Scooter E Concept. Yesterday, MB joined the fray and announced its own Smart EScooter Concept.
A cool inclusion is your Apple iPhone will double as the dashboard too. And being that its from Mercedes, the concept’s safety features – airbag, ABS anti-lock brake system, even a Blind Spot Assist, are also the ones which set it apart from others. Another is the return to the original ethos of Smart – customization. Riders will be able to purchase body panels and assemble their own colorful renditions. Charging through its emblem, the EScooter can go 100 km before another boost is needed. Of course, the fun part is how fast this thing can go. The rear disc hub motor generates about 4 kW, or around 45 km/h (that is 26 mph). Not fast if you compare to, oh say, a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. But can a Ferrari zip through the notoriously congested New York City traffic in a New York minute? Don’t think so… The Smart EScooter Concept will make its debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show in 2 weeks
