Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer – Nike Doernbecher Freestyle Air Jordan III Launch | Event Recap

By - December 4th, 2010

While the rest of New York City were deep in their slumbers, around 130 braved below-zero temperature and drowsiness to be those first few with the new Air Jordan III by cancer survivor Cole Johanson. Part of the much in demand 2010 Nike Doernbecher Freestyle Collection, Johanson’s creation was not only the first AJ3 to be part of the Doernbecher project. Its all red upper also channeled some ambience of what Jordan Brand is about.

To alleviate much of the chaos often associate with Jordan releases, Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer flagship store, one of only 2 Doernbecher retail locations in New York City, made the decision for a Midnight launch early Friday morning. By 5 pm in the afternoon, a queue started to form in front of the store. While all on the line-up brought the necessities for the cold weather, others prepared for the worst with their car in waiting. One person on line even brought his down comforter just in case. When Midnight arrived, the doors swung opened as groups of 5 to 8 filed into the store. In an hour’s time, some of the more popular sizes of 9 and 10 were gone.  Few on the queue begin to contemplate whether to head north for the NikeTown New York’s release at 8 am this morning. Finally, when the end came at 2 am in the wee hour of the morning, the last of the few patrons snatched up sizes 15 so to say the wait was not for nothing.
