“Where are you in the 2010’s?” asked the headline. For the large part of the last 2 decades, Nigo, the impresario of Tokyo’s urban scene, navigated his A Bathing Ape franchise through trend and hype of various sorts. But even he knows that fashion is a cyclical creature, with fondness of nostalgia and flashback. A primary reason why he established a new label recently, HUMAN MADE. Inspired by his own collection of vintage clothing and archives of A Bathing Ape’s early renditions, HUMAN MADE explores the subtle design cues between past and present. Items like the Yokosuka Jumper Jacket, an re-interpretation of the silk Suka Jacket favored by Japanese street gangs. The construction of this new variant is largely the same, except the cartoonish graphics embroidered on the back, some by NIGO’s friends at Sk8thing. In very limited offering, the first collection of HUMAN MADE By NIGO is now available at BEAMS Harajuku flagship, Sun Trap, and Rock And Roll of Tokyo.
