Expressions of disappointment quickly enveloped their faces as they tugged at the door. And though they were right to assume the CONVERSE SoHo Specialty Store, the only one of its kind in New York City, to be opened on a Thursday afternoon. The locked doors said otherwise. The reason behind this discrepancy of opening hours was not because of a misunderstanding or human resource snafu. Instead, it was on purpose for a right reason of course the official opening of the store. Operational since this year’s Black Friday, November 26th, the newest addition to CONVERSE‘s growing list of flagship never enjoyed an official opening event, that was till last Thursday.
Close to 1000 revelers joined in the celebration as they get the opportunity to see the store up close, some for the first time. Special guests include activist Suzanne “Africa” Engo, urban yoga promoter Ghylian Bell, Gaboury Sidibe, actress from Oscar winning film Precious, musical talent Q-Tip and Albert Hammond Jr., Theophilus London, Jim Jones, Lupe Fiasco, and more. But the honorary title goes to the elder statesman of basketball, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who traded stories and laughter with a steady rotation of well-wishers.
