FUTURA 2000 Black Fog | Painting Sold For $56,250 At Auction

Predicted at first to be an unsettling year, 2010 proven to be quite the opposite for art, especially those in the contemporary genre. Kicked off the year was the sale of “Walking Man”, a life-size sculpture in bronze by Alberto Giacometti, which went for $104.3 million dollars during a Sotheby’s. It was followed by Pablo Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust”, which sold for $106.6 million dollars. All the while, there were countless exhibitions, of retrospective or new works, from Richard Prince, Shepard Fairey, to KAWS. Rounding off the year, decadence and lavish parties returned to Art Basel Miami Beach once again.

There was also the year’s last major art auction, 80’s by auction house Phillips de Pury & Co. which took place in New York City on Friday. Among Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf and etc… there was Lot #71, Black Fog by Lenny McGurr, better known as FUTURA 2000 or FUTURA. Measured at 83 1 /2 by 106 1 /2, the painting was done in FUTURA’s tool of choice, spray paint, on canvas in 1990. The asking price range was $25,000 ~ $35,000, but the demand of the artist’s work is such, the painting sold for $56,250, $21,250 over the highest estimate. In addition, the price broke the record paid for FUTURA at auctions. Congratulations FUTURA!
