Our attention this week is still very much on the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan last week, as the country now faces nuclear radiation, food shortages, and mourns the casualties. Fittingly, a number of stories this week centered on our involvement, along with Stussy, fragment design, and ZOZOTOWN, in relief efforts. And while all other news pales in comparison, we did have a lot to cover, including: two new shoes from Supreme x Vans, which true to form were quick to disappear. Also, new shoes and new apparel for Spring 2011 from ALIFE – including interesting new footwear models. Hiroki Nakamura has also been busy: we covered the release event for the Visvim women’s line at On Pedder, and the trunk show in L.A.. A more “pop” fashion story this week was the behind-the-scenes look (courtesy of Cobrasnake) at Jeremy Scott and Katy Perry, as the two worked on the new Adidas Is All In campaign. Nike showed that it’s keeping an eye on trends by announcing round two in the collaboration with Liberty – the pedigreed British fabric maker that is having something of a moment right now. And a pretty big surprise came when a new Reese Forbes shoe was released this week – not made by Nike. G-Shock announced a collaboration this week with artist KRINK – for which we have images and a video. Finally, a musical bonus from Kanye West, featuring some fellow current reigning champs of mainstream hip hip. Check out the details of all of this week’s news after the jump.
Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief
After Freshness decided to donate to Japan relief efforts, it was very heartening to see other organizations within our subculture stepping up as well. The efforts we’ve been glad to cover this week in the Stussy x fragment design T-shirt, and a ZOZOTOWN charity effort also centered around a T-shirt design. We urge readers to check out the links below to find out how they can get involved. Both shirts are great designs, and a chance to do a small amount of good, that hopefully will add up.

Supreme x VANS Mike Carroll + Old Skool | Release Info
Supreme dug pretty deep into the vault at Vans to bring out the Mike Carroll signature model; the shoe was originally released in 1994 – which gives it special relevance for the New York based label, which opened in that year. The Old Skool is a bit of a Supreme staple at this point, and most colorways and sizes of both shoes sold out very quickly. No surprise there.
ALIFE Spring 2011 Sportswear and Footwear
Looks at the ALIFE apparel and footwear collections for Spring 2011 were released this week. Both are very much worth a look; the apparel includes streetwear staples like graphic T-shirts, but branches out into slim cut cotton pants, cardigans, and mixed-plaid button down shirts. On the footwear side, some old ALIFE standbys reappear, like the Everybody, but there are some very interesting new models too, some of which are extremely appealing.
visvim x On Pedder visvim Womens Collection Launch Party | Hong Kong
Union x Visvim Trunk Show | Event Recap
In addition to our look at the Gabo Hi, visvim news this week revolved around two events: first, the unveiling event at On Pedder, in Hong Kong, of Hiroki Nakamura’s women’s line, which Freshness was on hand to cover. Second was the trunk show held at the Chateau Marmont in L.A., supported by the only long-time US-based visvim stockists, Union. Both events, unsurprisingly, included some beautiful, stylish people, and tons of beautiful, stylish shoes and clothing. A related story, yet to be confirmed, was that Bergdorf Goodman would be stocking visvim in the near future.
adidas Originals by Originals Jeremy Scott Behind The Scene Look With Katy Perry | By Cobrasnake
Adidas recently unveiled a new global campaign titled Adidas Is All In, and the Three Stripe is kicking it off with some starpower. The campaign features pop artist Katie Perry, and the brand retained Jeremy Scott on the apparel and styling front. And just to increase hipster appeal, a series of behind-the-scenes photos of the campaign video production was done by Cobrasnake.
The North Face Purple Label Spring 2011 Jackets
The North Face is doing a pretty good job at keeping The Purple Label exclusive and relatively hard to find. Many U.S. shoppers have hit a wall in trying to find the amazing pieces – and that isn’t changing yet, except for those willing to proxy. This week, TNF Purple Label released the Spring 2011 collection of jackets, which includes both technical pieces, and pieces that work in vintage mountaineering/outdoor equipment styling. Our look comes courtesy of Intention, where the pieces are available.
Liberty London x Nike Sportswear Summer 2011 Collection
Nike collaborated with Liberty in 2009, and in the years since, the very recognizable patterned fabric made by the British company has seen a major subculture revival – note it’s appearance in the CASH CA x Neighborhood collaboration this Spring, as well as in a button down which is part of Supreme’s Spring 2011 collection. This latest round of Liberty fabric shoes includes a total of 12 shoes, spanning the AF1, the Blazer, and the Dunk. Whimsical but not too silly, and for the right situation, there are some strong offerings here. The shoes release April 1st at Liberty of London, and then on May 1st everywhere else.
Quiksilver RF1 Reese Forbes New Signature Sneakers
Reese Forbes stunned many in the skateboarding world when he announced his departure from the Nike SB stable; Forbes was among the senior statesmen of the brand, and helped forge Nike’s reputation in skateboarding in the early 2000’s along with other founding fathers Gino Iannucci, Danny Supa, and Richard Mulder. Every Reese Forbes shoe by Nike SB is essentially sneakerhead gold, and whether or not the new shoe, which is made by Quicksilver, becomes a collector’s item or not, it’s definitely an updated look for Forbes.
KRINK x Casio G-Shock
The latest in a long history of collaborations between Casio G-Shock and artists/brands/stores/etc, is with artist Craig “KR” Costello – of Krink fame. The watch in question is obviously done in the bright silver the former graffiti artist made his name dripping all over New York City. Casio also produced a video interview to support the project.
Kanye West featuring Lil Wayne, Big Sean, & Drake All of the Lights (Remix)
Finally, just a quick musical bonus this week. Hip hop perfected the “collaboration” long before anyone put an “x” in between two streetwear brands. But this latest Kanye West track, which features appearances by Lil Wayne, Big Sean, and Drake, evokes the partnerships we’ve come to expect in fashion, as each of these artist represents some major bankable name recognition. While this track won’t be a song of the year, it’s not bad for so early in the year, and something to keep the Weezy fans satisfied for a bit.
