Ever entertained the wildly improbable notion that it’d be great to see indie rock’s Matt and Kim — alongside nascent rapper Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover — matched up with hip-hop stalwart Jim Jones? You could have seen this flight of fancy in the flesh if you were in New York this past Monday, though the venue wasn’t a club or a concert hall. Instead, the musical acts squared off against each other at Band of Ballers, CONVERSE‘s annual three-on-three basketball tournament. Joining them this year were teams headed by Wiz Khalifa, Chiddy Bang, and Cory Gunz and Lil Twist from the Young Money crew. MTV was there at the La Salle Academy high school gymnasium to cover the proceedings. Sway and Bobbito Garcia took on game-calling duties, while DJ D-Nice was on hand to provide beats throughout the day. Were Jim Jones and his “Jones Family” squad able to repeat as tournament champs? You’ll have to wait until August, when MTV2 will broadcast a special show about the event.
