Think art heists happen only in movies? Think again, though this isn’t exactly a caper worthy of Danny Ocean. On August 4, 2011, a man walked into the Mark Ecko art gallery in New York at around 6 pm. He liberated a KAWS piece from its frame, rolled it up and slid it into a tube and strolled out of the building. Surveillance video captured the mustachioed thief in the elevator looking directly into the camera. He absconded with a poster, “Untitled (Calvin Klein),” that features a KAWS spermatozoa in acrylic over an actual Calvin Klein poster ad. Valued at $100,000, it should keep the mystery man in hoodie and sunglasses for many years to come.
