One crucial advancement in product development, especially in the last decade, was the democratization of design process. No longer exclusive to a designer or design team, such alteration empowered any individual to take part in his or her designs. And in effect, materialize their own stories into a physical form. Such personable artifact of one’s past experiences and present decisions is the tenet behind adidas miadidas customization concept. In an effort to demonstrate the design range of miadidas customization concept, adidas asked 2 top-seed professional tennis players, Viktor Troicki of Serbia and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, to realize a set of custom adidas Barricade 6.0 tennis sneakers for the upcoming U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York City.
Upon leaving the then war torn Serbia, Viktor Troicki learned to be self sufficient at an early age. His move to Florida at age thirteen proved to be right decision for his tennis skills. Unfortunately, he faced further hardship upon his return to Serbia three years later. Without a support structure in the forms of coaches and sponsorship, Troicki worked even harder to keep up with his peers. That intense work ethic is evident today even as he achieved a string of successes on the tennis court. In a reflection of his personal story, both the miadidas Barricade 6.0 on the US Open courts and miadidas Stan Smith off the courts will include a black to white gradient, symbolic of Troicki’s journey from darkness to light, from uncertainties to success. Though through it all, maintained a sense of hope with a dedication to hard work and family strength, seen on the design as blue add-on. Not forgetting his roots, Troicki included the Serbian flag colors of red, blue, and white, along with the word “Troya”, a fond nickname derived from his family name.
Proud and flamboyant, the colorful Marcos Baghdatis lives life as many of his fellow Cypriots would, to the fullest. Under his father’s tutelage, Baghdatis took up tennis at age five. Soon, Baghdatis decided to devote his life to the sport at age eleven. The impressionable young man blossomed and became Cyprus’ number one player, at just the age of thirteen. Like himself, Baghdatis designed his variant of miadidas Barricade 6.0 and miadidas Stan Smith to be crowd-pleasers with a hint of silver, in reference to the beautiful beaches of Cyprus. As emphasis to his love of tennis and country, Baghdatis added “Cypriot” to the embroidery and a green/orange color scheme to the Barricade 6.0 design, both highlight his timeless bond to the island nation.
