Things are looking up at Ford. Under the guidance of CEO Alan Mulally, the former Boeing exec with a knack of turning corporation around, Ford reported a profit of $2.7 billion dollars in 2009, the first profitable year after a four-year slump. With its finance in order, the company turned to its vehicle design process. The outcome – Ford EVOS Concept.
Set for an officially unveiling at this month’s all-important Frankfurt Motor Show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) in Germany, the Ford EVOS Concept resonants three key tenets of the new Ford: great designs, smart technologies, and leading fuel economy. Outlined by Ford’s Chief Creative Officer J. Mays, who worked on Ford GT, Aston Martin DB9, Jaguar F-Type among others, the aggressive styling of the EVOS Concept will translates to the new global design DNA for Ford. As for technologies, the design study will feature a b-pillar less design with not two but four gull wings doors for ease of access. A conceptual version of Ford’s SYNC connectivity system allows driver and passengers to customize the functions to their needs. Still another concept, based on the upcoming Ford C-MAX Energi powertrain, will “cloud-optimised” the PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) functions. In other words, the system will split between all-gasoline, all-electric, or hybrid modes in real-time according to road conditions automatically.
