Anyone who learned photography in the pre-digital era will understand and relate to what Jonathan Mannion is talking about. The photography process used to be like a ritual, and Mannion has been taking photos before the digital craze. Even if you are into hip hop and R&B music, there is a chance you may have not heard of this Cleveland-born photographer; however, there is almost a guarantee you have seen at least one of his works before. From the iconic images of Notorious B.I.G. or Jay-Z, to fallen stars such as Aaliyah and Heavy D, Mannion’s list of clientele reads like a “who’s who” of the urban music industry. For this year’s Art Basel Miami, Mannion is holding a solo exhibition showcasing his vast collection of photographs. Berlin-based online media site MADE caught up with the famed photographer for a quick one-on-one, to get the low down on his amazing career. Aspiring photographers and creative types should definitely check out the short video after the jump.
