Photographer Jonathan Mannion has been documenting the world of hip hop since the early ’90s. The Cleveland native was the subject of a solo exhibition during Art Basel Miami Beach in the AE District, sponsored by Reebok Classics. In conjunction with the show, titled “Classic,” Jonathan sat down for an hour-long discussion with Miami MC Rick Ross, highlights of which were captured on video. The conversation is broke up into two parts, the first featuring an examination of the photo sessions for the Rick Ross albums Trilla, Deeper Than Rap, Teflon Don and God Forgives, I Don’t. As Mannion explains, the images are “a visual exploration of my interpretation of Ross’ rise to the top of the game.” The second installment is a look back at the pair’s humble beginnings, and the drive and hunger that propelled the two to the top of their respective games.
