With almost all the conversations related to “the bunyip,” it sounded like a cryptozoology conference at first. But in reality, it was the launch event for the latest PUMA collaboration, one with long time sneaker-centric publication Sneaker Freaker from Australia. In a sit-down conversation at SF Australian office with its designer, Sneaker Freaker publisher Simon “Woody” Wood, who disclosed the creation was 3 years in making and billed as the PUMA Bunyip because of a particular reference to the Australian Aboriginal Mythology. Translated as “evil spirit” or even “the Devil” in English terms, descriptions of the bunyip, explained by Woody, actually vary across the great Australian outback. Linked to everything from dingo or horse like creature to a lizard related organism. Some even said the bunyip to be a bipedal monstrosity much like Big Foot or Yeti of Down Under.
The same cannot be said of the Sneaker Freaker x PUMA Bunyip, however. Drawn from the original PUMA Dallas silhouette, Woody and the design team at Sneaker Freaker re-imagined it to be a causal lifestyle sneaker instead. So gone were all traces of athletic embodiments and rugged lines. Added were crepe rubber outsole, a leather midsole, and a suede upper. Each was then lined with a layer of premium leather on the interior and you have one of the most comfortable casual sneaker out on the market.
While guests at last week’s event took home pairs of the PUMA Bunyip for keep, you can have your very own on May 15th. That is when the Sneaker Freaker x PUMA Bunyip hits PUMA retailers worldwide and the word “bunyip” becomes a household term. Also be on the lookout for more special Sneaker Freaker project as the publication celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Photos courtesy of therush
