Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype

There are a lot of impressive numbers surrounding Porsche‘s new highly anticipated 2014 918 Spyder, whose first prototypes are now beginning to hit the road. Expected to hit 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds, a max speed of 202 mph, and average 78 miles-per-gallon, this car’s plug-in hybrid power-train is nothing to roll your eyes at. Carrying a 419 kW / 562 hp 4.6-liter V8 engine, a 80 kW / 107 hp electric motor on the front axle, and a 122 PS (90 kW / 121 hp) electric motor on the rear axle, Porsche’s designers have overcome unique design and engineering challenges to build a car with a powerful split personality. And thanks to its full carbon fiber-reinforced polymer monocoque, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear axle steering, upward-venting “top pipes’ exhaust system, and a 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, drivers of this model can travel more than 15.5 miles on electricity alone at speeds pushing 95mph. Production of the quickest and greenest Porsche in history will begin in September 2013 only in left-hand-drive, but something tells us the $845,000 price tag will be causing the most discomfort. via: AutoBlog
