Woven into an article published today by The New York Times about Rei Kawakubo’s ability to transform and revitalize unassuming neighborhoods into fashion hot-spots was an exciting announcement: Kawakubo is actively scouting out a location for a new Dover Street Market in New York City. While the exact spot hasn’t been selected yet, Kawakubo is approaching this decision in much the same way that led to the success of her Aoyama and SoHo COMME des CARCONS locations opened in 1981 and 1983, respectively. Both of those locations redefined their neighborhoods away from a reputation of disrepair toward one known for its influence in local fashion, design, and art. At the earliest, the store will likely open in 2013 and would mark the Japanese multi-brand’s third location. Stay tuned as we will keep you posted as more information about the opening becomes available.
