Designed to match the long, fluid lines of a concept car and be a “seamless extension of your body,” Nike Basketball‘s Air Flightposite represents another milestone in the brand’s storied footwear history, which is the subject of today’s edition of Nike’s “20 Designs That Changed the Game” series. With a new, progressive external appearance full of smooth lines and a construction that centered on merging your foot with the design, Nike demonstrated their understanding of the need for a comfortable and responsive sneaker that participated in expanding your game instead of just coming along for the ride. Nike looked back at the biomechanics of the body as the main reference point in the shoe’s design and extended it with the fluidity of a zippered lacing system, a uniform foam body, and a glove-like collar. Ultimately, Nike achieved their goal of creating a “sock around your foot,” spurring a new direction in footwear that is still being explored today–further proof that Nike’s never-ending desire to innovate can send ripples through the industry for decades.
