Some 40 years ago, he was just another kid from New York City, looking for a way to express his creativity. He found it in graffiti where the paint brush was a spray can and the medium was your surrounding. Now, Leonard McGurr, or better known by his nom de plume FUTURA, is still that kid from so many years past, with boundless creativity, except the venue has changed.
Coincide with Fashion’s Night Out and New York Fashion Week, Andy Valmorbida‘s namesake gallery in the fashionable TriBeCa neighborhood hosted the opening of FUTURA’s “Future-Shock” exhibition last evening. Curated by Nemo Librizzi with generous support from PM Tenore, Bombardier Aerospace, and RVCA Artist Network, the show is mini retrospective of all FUTURA’s most current works. And while his medium is now a canvas, at each paintings’ core, FUTURA retained much of that seedy, street-born style, many of which he pioneered in early 1970s and 1980s.
Along with leggy, blue-eyed model in attendance last night, Russell Simmons, PM Tenore, Jessica Hart, David Hershkovits, Fab 5 Freddy, Luis Guzman, Kool Keith, Andy Valmorbida, Olivia Sandelman, Stephanie Lacava, Morgan Collett, Charlotte Kidd, and more, joined the artist in celebration of the exhibit’s first night. “Future-Shock” by FUTURA will be on display from now till Friday, October 5th, at VALMORBIDA in New York City.
