Simply from a brief glance of the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Concept, its easy to see why the pony car took home the “Hottest Car” honor at this week’s 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Modified by engineers at Ford Racing, the one-off concept is a race going version of the 2013 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet. While the powerplant is the same 5.0-liter V8 with EcoBoost technology, the attachment of twin-turbochargers awakens the beast within. Because the turbochargers capitalize on exhaust gases that would otherwise go to waste, the additional reserve in power goes to drive turbines and compressors. The result is vehicle with big boost in power and torque but without typical slow responsiveness on a supercharger. Race ready and quipped with a full roll-cage, safety harness, “Cobra Jet” branded RECARO racing seats, and external shut-off, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Concept also features the new Ford Racing livery in black and blue strips on white. While many of the concept’s proven technologies will be available on future Ford models, company executives have not decided to put it into production, at least not yet.
