In its recap of Air Force 1′s 30th Anniversary and the upcoming release of Lunar Force 1, Nike unveiled an interesting aspect in the development of Lunarlon sole unit. While a generation separates the introduction of Nike waffle sole and the recent inclusion of Nike Lunarlon, there was one curious aspect both shared.
A milestone in Nike’s annal was how Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman created the first Nike waffle sole when he simply poured rubber onto his waffle iron, much to his wife’s dismay. Food preparation was once again a source of insight for the Nike Lunarlon. During its development phase, Nike designers froze Lunarlon molds to stabilized them. In no time, thousands upon thousands of ice cream bar-like foam footprints filled the Nike Innovation Kitchen department. Proving once again that you only need a great idea and countless tinkering to come away with a great invention.
