3D printing has made tremendous progress in the last few years, from prototyping for large corporations and factories to being affordable for students and the general public. Omote 3D Shashin Kan is the latest craze to hit Tokyo. Loosely translated as Omotesando Photo Gallery, this pop-up shop in GYRE allows visitors to create a miniature version of themselves through 3D printing. As illustrated by NIGO above and Takeshi Osumi below, the result is very convincing and detailed. It simply requires the participant to stand still for 15 minutes, while staff at the shop use a 3D scanner to scan every angle of the body. Once the process is finished, it takes around a month for the complete figurine. Unfortunately, all sessions have sold out already, but extra sessions may be added, so check back on their website.
