This year’s month-long observance of Black History Month takes on a special meaning since it also marks the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the end to slavery in America. To honor accomplishments of the distant past and the near future, Nike will mark the occasion with its expansive 2013 Black History Month Collection. In addition to the trio from Nike Basketball, the aforementioned Air Force 1 Foamposite High and the Air Force 1 Low Downtown honoring soccer star Didier Drogba, the Women’s Dunk Sky Hi highlights the achievements of tennis player Serena Williams.
Clothed in tan fabric with appointments of lightning bolt tennis balls in orange and a “Be Bold. Be True” montage on the sockliner, the special edition doesn’t just celebrate Williams’ triumphant wins on the tennis courts but her work empowering young women through the school she helped build in Kenya. Limited in production, the Nike Women’s Dunk Sky Hi “Black History Month” Edition will be available on Saturday, January 26th, through select Nike retailers.
