The concept is audacious if not counter-intuitive since we’ve all been taught at a young age that electricity and water don’t mix well. But if Mercedes-Benz, its performance division Mercedes AMG, and powerboat builder Cigarette Racing have their ways, that centuries-old notion will be a thing of the past. Currently on display at the prestigious Miami International Boat Show is the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept, a 38-foot long powerboat capable of reaching a top speed of 160km/h, or a whopping 86 knots on the water. The best part, it runs on electricity only.
In identical neon-yellow “AMG Electricbeam magno” paintwork as to the original Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive E-CELL Concept, the boat features a set of twelve liquid-cooled permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors within its aft-portion. Linked up to 48 modules with a total of 3456 lithium-ion battery cells, the boat can be fully charged in seven hours time or a quick charge time of only 3 hours. Each drive will generates around 138 kW of electricity for a total of 1656 Kilowatts and a maximum torque of 3000 Newton meters combine. A quick calculation will have that at around 2,220 horsepower, making it the world’s fastest electric driven watercraft to date. To see the boat in person, simply look for a bright neon-yellow beast at the Miami International Boat Show this weekend.
