Two things make the highly anticipated Spring Breakers more than just a disposable cinematic romp through South Florida’s bikinied teenage wasteland. One, the film is directed by Harmony Korine, the auteur responsible for Gummo and Trash Humpers, as well as the screenplay for Kids when he was just 19. Hailed as both a genius and aimless provocateur, Korine is indisputably a talented filmmaker; if anything, it will be his vision that ultimately makes the movie worth watching. Two, the cast is filled out by (formerly) squeaky clean tween actresses Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson, along with Harmony’s wife Rachel Korine. In the film, the girls are shepherded by a cornrowed drug dealer played by James Franco into the dark side of spring break.
