In compiling this year’s list of the world’s richest billionaires, Forbes found a record 1,426 individuals in the ten-figure fortune club — 200 more than the total from 2012, which had been itself a record breaking year. Here’s a tally of the significant figures: the net worth of this most elite group totals $5.4 trillion, representing a 17% increase from last year. The average net worth of each billionaire stands at $3.8 billion, $100 million more than last year. The U.S. tops the list with 442 billionaires, followed by Asia-Pacific (386), Europe (366), the Americas (129) and the Middle East and Africa (103). The individual leading this year’s list is telecom mogul Carlos Slim of Mexico, with a net worth of $73 billion, followed by Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates ($67 billion) of the U.S., and Amancio Ortega ($57 billion) of Spain, the founding chairman of the Spanish fashion group Inditex, best known for its Zara retail chain.
